Caroline, or Change Thoughts

When we were first talking about Caroline, or Change, we had talked about how Tony Kushner had grown up with a maid and that this play was based off of her. But this play almost depicts Caroline as always being rather rude and marose. But for some reason Tony Kushner's old maid said she adored the play and was very grateful. This doesn't really seem to make any sense to me and I am interested into hearing your guys' thoughts on this...

  1. Now that we have heard Tony Kushner speak, what I found interesting was that the lady that the character of Caroline was based off of had never seen a play before and I was interested in how she must have felt not only going to her first play, but seeing parts of herself up on stage.

  2. She must have felt honored that he chose to depict her as the main character. In terms of her reaction to Caroline, I would say she was either very self aware of her rough edges or she was pleased that he was not covering up the character's struggle with fake smiles.
Could you imagine how different the book would be if Caroline was a chipper woman?

  3. Was Caroline based directly off of her character? Or was it just sort of an inspiration for Caroline or Change

  4. I thought that his old maid was just the inspiration, but what about when Kushner asked her if she could relate to Caroline? He told us that she said she never felt the same way Caroline did, yet her daughter was behind her back, nodding yes. So was she unhappy too?
